Mashako plan for relaunching routine immunisation

According to the latest MICS survey carried out during the period from 2017 to 2018, two thirds of Congolese children, i.e., 2.5 million, have not received all the vaccines included in the vaccination schedule as defined by the Expanded Vaccination Program (PEV) in DR Congo.

These poor vaccine coverages had resulted in the emergence of some epidemics, namely polio and measles. The country is also facing the circulation of vaccine derived poliovirus responsible for epidemics of cDVPV polio and repeated epidemics of measles that affected all provinces.

Mashako plan for relaunching routine immunisation

The DRC has put in place an emergency plan to revive routine immunization, called the Mashako plan, to increase immunization coverage in 9 initial provinces comprising half of the children not or partially immunised.

The vision of the Mashako plan is to rapidly increase the availability of vaccines and the frequency of immunization sessions, both of which correlate directly with immunization coverage.

These interventions strengthen accountability in evaluation four priority indicators:
Supervision of health zones and health areas
The availability of vaccines and inputs
The functionality of the cold chain
The availability of vaccination sessions
In view of the encouraging results recorded in these 9 provinces, it was decided to extend the Mashako plan to all the provinces of the country. To date, the Mashako plan covers 23 provinces and will cover the remaining 3 provinces during Q3 2021.
